Biography

Gregory Sivakoff is a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Alberta. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University in 2000, followed by a Master’s degree from the University of Manchester in 2001. He completed another Master’s degree and his PhD at the University of Virginia in 2003 and 2006, respectively. He began his academic journey as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Ohio State University, where he worked from 2006 to 2008, and then served as a Research Associate at the University of Virginia until 2011. Since joining the University of Alberta, he has progressed from Assistant Professor (2011-2017) to Associate Professor (2017-present), and Associate Chair of Research in Physics (2018-present). His research focuses primarily on multi-wavelength observations of white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes, as well as transient and variable astronomical sources. His teaching interests include Astronomy and Physics, and he emphasizes the importance of conceptual understanding and problem-solving in mathematics. Sivakoff is also deeply committed to mentoring students, both undergraduates and graduates, and actively engages in education and public outreach initiatives in astronomy.
