Gregory Thaler is an interdisciplinary environmental social scientist whose research focuses on the political dimensions of social-ecological transformations. He examines political ecology, political economy, development, global environmental governance, and agrarian politics, with a special interest in comparative, ethnographic, and action-research methodologies. His research primarily concentrates on Brazil, where he co-directs the Brazil Natural Resource Governance Initiative, collaborating with colleagues from the University of Georgia (USA) and the Federal University of Pará (Brazil). Previous research has taken him to Bolivia, Ecuador, and Indonesia, where he has engaged in international negotiations in Europe. Thaler's experiences are discussed in his book, "Saving Rainforest Losing World: Conservation Displacement Global Tropics," which analyzes agricultural development and forest conservation in Brazil, Bolivia, and Indonesia. Before joining Oxford, he was an Assistant Professor of International Affairs at the University of Georgia (USA). Thaler holds a PhD in Government from Cornell University, an MA from Cornell University, and a BA from Yale University. He has also received international fellowships and grants, including from UNESCO and Fulbright. Currently, he is developing new transdisciplinary collaborations focused on agroforestry and climate change in the Brazilian Amazon.
