Dr. Gregory Tyrrell

Biography

Gregory Tyrrell is a Professor in the Division of Diagnostic Applied Microbiology at the University of Alberta and has dedicated over two decades to the field of clinical microbiology. He earned his BSc and MSc degrees before completing a PhD at the University of Toronto. Following his doctoral work, he completed a two-year Clinical Microbiology Fellowship at the same institution, subsequently working at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His current role, since returning to Edmonton, involves extensive oversight of various clinical programs at the Alberta Provincial Laboratory for Public Health. His research centers on epidemiology of streptococcal diseases, particularly Streptococcus pneumoniae and Group B streptococci. Tyrrell has contributed to multiple vaccine advisory groups in Canada, focusing on pneumococcal and meningococcal vaccinations. His dedication is complemented by teaching responsibilities, where he supervises both undergraduate and graduate students in Medical Microbiology. Tyrrell's prominent research output includes investigations into bacterial diseases and antimicrobial resistance, manifesting in numerous publications spanning conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
