Gregory Ward received a BA in Comparative Literature Linguistics with honors from the University of California-Berkeley in 1978 and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1985. He has been a Professor in Linguistics and Gender & Sexuality Studies at Northwestern University since 1986, and he previously served as Chair from 1999 to 2004. His primary research area is discourse and pragmatics, with specific interests in pragmatic theory, information structure, and reference/anaphora. His recent publications investigate various aspects of reference and semantics-pragmatics boundaries, and he has collaborated with notable colleagues such as Ryan Doran and Andrew Kehler. He was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences during 2004-2005 and has served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Linguistic Society of America from 2004 to 2007. In 2009, he was elected a Fellow of the LSA and currently serves on six editorial boards. Ward teaches courses related to pragmatics and gender studies, including LING 371, LING 372, LING 373, LING 317, LING 223, and LING 327. He received the E. LeRoy Hall Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2012 from the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.
