Biography

Greg Wiercioch joined the Frank J. Remington Center in 2012, serving as a supervising attorney for Legal Assistance for Incarcerated People. Before coming to the University of Wisconsin, he represented individuals on death row in Texas in both state and federal post-conviction proceedings. In 1995, he co-founded the Texas Defender Service, a nonprofit law firm dedicated to improving the quality of capital representation in Texas. Throughout his career, Greg has represented several severely mentally ill individuals on death row and is particularly interested in issues related to competency to stand trial, competency to waive collateral review, and competency at execution. He successfully argued the case Panetti v. Quarterman before the U.S. Supreme Court, which held that the Fifth Circuit's standard for determining competency was unconstitutional as it failed to consider whether a person on death row had a rational understanding of the reasons for their execution. Greg has spoken at numerous national conferences regarding the representation of mentally ill individuals on death row and continues to advocate for those facing execution.
