Dr. Gretchen Hermes

Biography

Gretchen Hermes completed her MD/PhD at the University of Chicago, focusing on pre-clinical stress-diathesis models of social neglect under the mentorship of Martha K. McClintock, a pioneer in social neuroscience. She specializes in developmental models of psychopathology, particularly schizophrenia and depression, which have influenced her current research on the comorbidity of mental illness and addiction. Dr. Hermes is an Associate Professor at Yale School of Medicine and is engaged in the Yale Residency Neuroscience Research Training Program with Ronald Duman, PhD, developing preclinical models related to social neglect. Her ongoing research at the Yale Stress Center involves studying adrenergic receptor agonists and their effects on drug craving and withdrawal. Dr. Hermes has established courses on Neurobiology of Addiction and has a post-doctoral background in infectious diseases. Additionally, she has completed psychoanalytic training and maintains an active interest in the interplay between addiction, trauma, and attachment. She is involved in numerous research initiatives and has received several prestigious awards throughout her academic career.
