Biography

Grigory Mikhalkin is a professor at the University of Geneva and a notable figure in the field of Tropical Geometry, a subdomain of algebraic geometry influenced by (max,+) calculus. He earned his PhD in 1993 at Michigan State University under the supervision of Oleg Viro and Selman Akbulut. His postdoctoral training included prestigious institutions such as Princeton, Bonn, Toronto, Berkeley, and Harvard from 1993 to 2000. Mikhalkin has held faculty positions at the University of Utah and the University of Toronto before joining the University of Geneva in 2008. Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades including the distinguished prize from the St. Petersburg Mathematical Society in 1999 and the Silver Medal from the Mexican Mathematical Society in 2011. He was awarded the Canada Research Chair from 2004 to 2009 and the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Bessel Research Award from the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation for 2007-2008. He also received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council from 2010 to 2015 and served as Chair at the Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris from 2013 to 2015. Mikhalkin's work has been featured in the Bourbaki seminars and he was a speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2006.
