Biography

Guanghui (George) Lan is a Russell Chandler III Chair Professor at the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech and serves as the Associate Director of the Machine Learning Data Science Center. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Systems Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2009. His research interests include the theory, algorithms, and applications of stochastic optimization and nonlinear programming. Currently, his work focuses on designing efficient algorithms that offer strong theoretical performance guarantees and superior practical performance for solving complex optimization problems. Lan actively pursues applications of stochastic nonlinear optimization models and algorithms in the field of machine learning and intelligence. His research has been supported by various prominent organizations including the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and the Army Research Office. Throughout his career, he has received numerous academic honors including the INFORMS Frederick W. Lanchester Prize in 2023 and the NSF CAREER Award in 2013. Lan has also served as an associate editor for several prestigious journals in his field since 2014.
