Dr. Guillermo Sapiro

Biography

Guillermo Sapiro is a distinguished member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University. He has made significant contributions to various fields including image and video processing, computer vision, biomedical imaging, and applied mathematics. Sapiro received his B.Sc. (summa cum laude), M.Sc., and Ph.D. from the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) in 1989, 1991, and 1993 respectively. Before joining Duke, he held positions at MIT and the University of Minnesota where he was named a Distinguished McKnight University Professor. At Duke, he has underlined the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, especially in the context of developing technologies for medical imaging and machine learning applications. He has published over 300 papers and has authored a book on mathematical image processing published by Cambridge University Press. His award-winning research includes the Gutwirth Scholarship, Rothschild Fellowship, and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. An active member of multiple professional societies, he has served as a founding Editor-in-Chief for the SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences. His work has paved the way for enhanced methodologies in machine learning and image analysis, particularly in the context of autism diagnosis and other mental health evaluations.
