Dr. Gülgün Tezel

Biography

Gülgün Tezel, MD, obtained her medical degree and completed her ophthalmology residency in Turkey. She began her career as a glaucoma clinician in 1989. Her dedication to understanding the treatment of glaucoma prompted her to transition from clinical practice to join the research team at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, in 1994. In 1999, she became part of the Research Faculty and established her laboratory at the University of Louisville, transferring to the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute at Columbia University in New York, NY, in 2014. With decades of experience in glaucoma research, Dr. Tezel directs multiple projects funded by the NIH/NEI, analyzing distinct molecular responses and interactions in vitro and in vivo. Her extensive research has yielded hundreds of scientific publications that illuminate various aspects of glaucoma. She has been invited to numerous national and international meetings to present her work and has organized symposiums on glaucoma. Dr. Tezel has received several professional awards, including the Research to Prevent Blindness Sybil B. Harrington Scholars Award and the World Glaucoma Association Potential Future Impact Award. She is a Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (FARVO, Class of 2016) and serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Glaucoma Foundation. Additionally, she is a member of several editorial boards, contributing to prominent ophthalmology journals.
