Dr. Gundula Proksch

Biography

Gundula Proksch is a licensed architect and Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington, also serving as Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture. She is the Founding Director of the Circular City + Living Systems Lab (CCLS), which investigates transformative strategies for sustainable urban futures. CCLS applies research design methods to explore systems that integrate circular economy principles into the living systems of buildings and cities. Proksch's work emphasizes producing and circulating resources within the food-water-energy nexus to develop efficient and sustainable urban environments. As Principal Investigator on a National Science Foundation funded project, she leads a collaborative research effort called CITYFOOD, investigating the integration of aquaponic systems in urban settings to address environmental, economic, and social challenges. Her book, "Creating Urban Agricultural Systems: Integrated Approach Design," published by Routledge in 2017, outlines approaches for urban farms to operate within integrated environmental systems sustainably. With over fifteen years of professional practice experience in Europe and the United States, Proksch has worked with notable architects, including David Chipperfield in London and Richard Meier in New York. She holds a Master of Architecture from Cornell University and a master-level degree from the Technical University Braunschweig in Germany.
