Biography

Gunnar Ólafur Hansson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of British Columbia (UBC). His research primarily focuses on theoretical phonology, examining the interplay of diachronic and synchronic factors that influence the properties of language systems. He explores long-distance dependencies in phonology, typological approaches, and computational learnability aspects of sound patterns. Gunnar's interests also extend to morphological paradigms, addressing issues such as inflectional classes, allomorphy, syncretism, and paradigm gaps. He works broadly within typology rather than concentrating solely on specific language regions, with significant contributions to the phonetics, phonology, and morphology of Icelandic. Additionally, he serves as a Co-Editor of the Nordic Journal of Linguistics, published by Cambridge University Press.
