Biography

Dr. Guo-zhen Zhu received his B.Eng. in Materials Science Engineering from Tsinghua University (Beijing, China) in 2007, followed by an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from McMaster University (Hamilton, Canada) in 2009 and 2012, respectively. After completing a year of post-doctoral research in Canada, he joined the faculty at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Shanghai, China) as an Associate Research Professor in 2014, later being promoted to Research Professor in 2016. In November 2017, he became an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba, where he now serves as an Associate Professor and holds the Canada Research Chair in Mechanical Functional Design of Nanostructured Materials. Dr. Zhu’s research focuses on nanostructured materials, interfaces, and advanced materials characterization, aiming to understand the design of atomic electronic structures comprising nanoscale 'imperfections' in crystalline materials. His work applies to advancements in aerospace, automotive, and energy industries, seeking to develop new methodologies for discovering, predicting, and designing advanced materials with superior mechanical, electrical, and catalytic performance.
