Biography

Professor Arrhenius is a world-renowned expert on the origins of early evolution, ocean-atmosphere interactions, and the molecular evolution of life. His research team attempts to reconstruct possible pathways for life on Earth through model experiments. One focus of Arrhenius's studies involves RNA-like molecules, which initially served as information carriers and catalysts in the chemical evolution that led to the origin of life. His findings extend to the analysis of ancient sedimentary rock formations on Earth, some of which are over 3.87 billion years old. Among his well-known contributions is the claim that Earth cooled sufficiently, within 10 million years, to support the beginning of life. He has also conducted significant studies of RNA precursor molecules at the NASA Specialized Center of Research and Training in Exobiology. His research has included biomarker studies on suspected meteoritic materials from Mars and a continued investigation into the organic chemistry that might represent possible pre-biological chemistry on Titan. Arrhenius joined the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, a precursor to UCSD, in 1959 and became a prominent figure in marine research.
