Dr. Gustavo Arosemena Solorzano

Biography

Gustavo Arosemena Solorzano works at the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights, focusing on theoretical and empirical perspectives in the field of human rights and legal reasoning. He obtained his LL.M. from the University of Texas at Austin and Utrecht University, followed by a PhD from Maastricht University. His doctoral research aimed to identify mechanisms for embedding economic, social, and cultural rights within a constitutional democratic framework. Arosemena's critical scholarship addresses the politicization of human rights. He has published works such as "Rights Scarcity Justice" (Intersentia, 2014) and contributed to various academic publications, including "Freedom transformation? Conflicting tendencies in UN human rights discourse" and "The deliberative deficit in human rights strategies: conceptual problems and practical implications". His research also delves into legal decision-making in human rights, exemplified by articles like "Conflicts of Rights in International Human Rights: A Meta-Rule Analysis". He currently explores reasoning concepts using network analysis techniques and empirical legal research methods. Throughout his career, Arosemena has lectured at institutions such as the University of A Coruña and the University of Antwerp.
