Biography

Guy Uriel E. Charles is a Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and the Charles J. Ogletree Jr. Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. He directs the Charles Hamilton Institute for Race and Justice. His research focuses on how law mediates political power and addresses racial subordination. He teaches various courses including civil procedure, election law, constitutional law, race law, critical race theory, and legislation. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the American Law Institute and was appointed by President Joseph Biden to the Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court of the United States. Currently, he is working on a book with Luis Fuentes-Rohwer, which argues that a race-based model underlies the Voting Rights Act and proposes means to protect against racial discrimination in voting. He is also co-editing a handbook with Aziza Ahmed, examining the current state of research on race and law in the United States.
