Dr. Guy Westwood

Biography

Guy Westwood is an Associate Professor of Greek Language and Literature at the University of Oxford, where he also serves as a Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Lady Margaret Hall. He completed his studies at Balliol College and Merton College, where he obtained his MSt and DPhil. His teaching and research focus on classical Greek and Roman rhetorical prose literature, specifically political oratory from democratic Athens. Westwood's notable publication, 'Rhetoric Past Demosthenes Aeschines: Oratory, History, Politics Classical Athens' (Oxford University Press, 2020), analyzes how Athenian politicians utilized historical narratives to influence audiences. His recent research interests delve into the performance aspects of classical Athenian oratory and its relationship with drama, particularly comedy. Westwood has held various academic positions, including a teaching fellowship at the University of Birmingham and temporary lectureships at several colleges in Oxford. Furthermore, he is committed to undergraduate education in Classics, overseeing joint schools and supervising dissertations in ancient Greek rhetoric and related fields.
