Biography

Guylaine Dionne is a full-time associate professor at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. She has directed several short feature films and has received numerous awards for her work. Her film "Les Fantômes des trois Madeleine" premiered at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000, marking the beginning of a prestigious international career showcased at festivals across Portugal, Korea, Belgium, France, Italy, and Canada. Her film has reached thousands of viewers globally and earned international accolades including the Don Quijote Award from the European Federation of Film Clubs and the International Critics' Prize. Dionne also received the 2004 Lanterna Magica Award for her documentary "Mary Shelley" at the Festival de l’Encre à l’Écran. In 2006, she was awarded the Don Haig Award for her contributions to both fiction and documentary filmmaking. In 2009, she directed "Waitresses Wanted (Serveuses demandées)", a feature-length fiction film that had an international theatrical release. Her documentary "Contemporary Women Filmmakers: State of Things" premiered at the Cinémathèque québécoise in June 2018, resulting from eight years of research and collaboration with Rosanna Maule. The film examines the role of women in global cinematography. Her latest project, "Jazz Club Owner," chronicles the daily life of Joel Giberovitch, the artistic director of a jazz bar in Montreal, and was an official selection at several film festivals in 2021.
