Biography

H. Timothy Lovelace, Jr. is a noted legal historian specializing in the civil rights movement. He joined the Duke Law faculty in June 2020 after previously holding a professorship at Indiana University's Maurer School of Law, where he was also affiliated with the Department of History. Lovelace has served as a visiting professor at the University of Virginia and taught as the John Hope Franklin Visiting Professor of American Legal History at Duke Law during the spring of 2019. His scholarship is focused on how the civil rights movement in the United States has influenced international human rights law. He has published articles in prestigious journals such as the Law and History Review and the American Journal of Legal History. His forthcoming book, World Side: U.S. and the U.N. Race Convention, examines how U.S. civil rights politics has shaped the development of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Lovelace teaches courses in American legal history, constitutional law, and race law. In 2015, he received the Indiana University Trustees’ Teaching Award and has been recognized for his contributions to law and education with support from several notable foundations. He earned both his J.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, where he was an Oliver Hill Scholar and recipient of the Thomas Marshall Miller Prize. Prior to joining the Indiana Law faculty, Lovelace was the assistant director of the Center for the Study of Race and Law at the University of Virginia School of Law, promoting discourse on race and law through lectures and scholarly work.
