Dr. H Sweeney

Biography

H. Lee Sweeney is an Emeritus Professor of Physiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. His research primarily focuses on the molecular motors involved in cellular movement and the generation of force in striated muscles. He investigates the molecular basis of muscle function and considers how injury impacts muscle performance. His work involves single-molecule studies to understand the functions of molecular motors like myosin, utilizing biochemical and structural analysis techniques. Beyond single molecules, Sweeney's research also includes studies at the cellular level where he explores the role of proteins in force generation and the assembly of the contractile apparatus in muscle cells. His investigations extend to whole organism studies, particularly gene transfer methods that assess changes in muscle structure and function due to the expression of specific proteins. Currently, he is focused on important muscle diseases, such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, seeking insights into potential causes and treatments.
