H. Mao is an Assistant Professor at Western University in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. He has a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Wayne State University and a Bachelor of Engineering Science in Mechanical Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Prior to joining Western Engineering, Dr. Mao worked as a Research Scientist, where he developed a research program focusing on blast-induced traumatic brain injury (TBI) for four years. His experience includes being a Product Development Engineer in the automotive industry, where he received the Chairman’s Merit Award. Dr. Mao’s Ph.D. research was conducted at one of the world's leading institutes for impact biomechanics, the Bioengineering Center of Wayne State University, and he continued his post-graduate research on significant projects related to developing the Global Human Body Models Consortium head model. His recent research, supported by Canada Research Chair funding, aims to understand the mechanisms of mild TBI and propose engineering solutions for brain protection. Dr. Mao’s research interests encompass topics related to impact injuries, improving active and passive safety for vehicles and enhancing occupant and pedestrian safety during car crashes. Moreover, he is focused on understanding pediatric biomechanics and the overarching theme of applying mechanics engineering principles to enhance mechanical structures for better human health outcomes.
