Biography

H. Mao is a Professor and Canada Research Chair Tier 2 in Head Mechanics at the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Western University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Wayne State University, where he developed a significant understanding of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Before his academic career, H. Mao worked for four years as a Research Scientist creating a research program focused on blast-induced TBI. Additionally, he has three years of experience as a Product Development Engineer in the automotive industry, where he was awarded the Chairman’s Merit Award. His current research, which is supported by the CRC, focuses on understanding the mechanisms of mild TBI and developing engineering solutions to better protect the brain. His research group also conducts projects aimed at improving vehicle safety for occupants and pedestrians during crashes and understanding pediatric biomechanics. His overarching theme is to apply mechanics and engineering principles to create better mechanical structures to help the human body.
