Dr. Hachem Kassem

Biography

Hachem Kassem is a Lecturer in Ocean Engineering at the University of Southampton, with a focus on coastal hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and coastal ocean engineering. His expertise encompasses both experimental and numerical investigations, addressing the interactions between coastal environments and the influences of climate change. Kassem leads the MSc Programme in Applied Coastal Offshore Geoscience, contributing to curriculum development and student supervision in geosciences and oceanography. His research includes environmental and anthropogenic impacts on coastal change, promoting adaptive and resilient nature-inclusive solutions to climate-mediated hazards such as coastal erosion and flooding. He is involved in significant projects including Environment Agency-funded studies examining nearshore dynamics and as a consultant for industry and governmental bodies on sustainable engineering practices. Kassem's academic journey includes roles from Teaching and Research Fellow in Coastal Morphodynamics to prior teaching positions in civil engineering at various institutions.
