Hadiya Roderique is an Assistant Professor in the Journalism Department of Arts, Culture, Media at the University of Toronto. Before joining the department, Hadiya worked as a consultant, speaker, broadcast commentator, journalist, and lawyer. She is an award-winning journalist, having won the National Magazine Award for short feature in 2021, with bylines in publications such as Walrus, National Post, Macleans, Toronto Star, Chatelaine, Elle, Local, and Globe and Mail. Hadiya is also the host of the podcast Canadaland's Commons and is recognized for her viral piece “Black Bay Street,” which outlines the experiences of a young Black woman working in a Bay Street firm. Her journalism focuses largely on inequity in society, with particular interest in race, parental bias, gender, and justice. Her research examines systemic racism, Black parenthood, the criminal justice system, sexual racism, Black joy, and employment barriers faced by BIPOC communities. Hadiya's current research projects explore barriers to hiring and advancement for BIPOC journalists and discourses of racism in media. She holds a J.D. and an M.A. in Criminology from the University of Toronto, along with a Ph.D. in Organizational Behaviour from the Rotman School of Management, focusing her research on gender and parental bias in the professional workplace. Hadiya is a caring instructor and has received teaching awards as a course instructor in Rotman’s undergraduate Commerce program.
