Biography

Hal Pawson is an Emeritus Professor at UNSW’s City Futures Research Centre and has held significant positions in housing research policy. He is recognized for leading numerous major research projects funded by the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute and the Australian Research Council. His expertise encompasses housing policy governance, private rental housing, social and affordable housing, and urban renewal. Pawson served as the Australasia Editor for the international journal Housing Studies from 2011 to 2019 and was the Managing Editor from 2019 to 2023. Before joining UNSW, he worked at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh from 1995 to 2011, and he retains an Honorary Professorship there as well as a role at Sheffield University’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning. In 2023, he became a non-Executive Director of Community Housing Canberra. His impactful research has contributed considerably to understanding the dynamics of housing in Australia, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
