Biography

Hamid Abdolvand is a Tier-2 Canada Research Chair in Advanced Materials for Low-Emission Energies. He is a faculty member of the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Western University. His research focuses on deformation and failure mechanisms of engineering materials across length and time scales. Prior to joining Western Engineering, he was a postdoc researcher at the University of Oxford, where he worked for three years on electron and synchrotron x-ray diffraction analysis of engineering materials. Abdolvand also has experience at the University of Manchester, where he developed finite element codes for Rolls-Royce Plc and AMEC-Europe. He received his PhD in 2012 from Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada, during which he developed a series of finite element codes for modeling the deformation of polycrystalline materials such as zirconium.
