Biography

Hamish Fraser is an Associate Professor in the Medical Science and Health Services Policy Practice departments at Brown University. His academic journey began with medical training in General Medicine and Cardiology, followed by expertise in Knowledge Based Systems from Edinburgh University and Clinical Decision Making from MIT. He has made significant contributions to the field of medical informatics, notably through his role as Co-Principal Investigator for major health informatics initiatives in low-income countries, including a CDC grant focused on an EMR system for HIV care in Rwanda. Fraser's research interests encompass the evaluation of eHealth systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), and the improvement of healthcare access and quality in these regions with a focus on non-communicable diseases. He has played a pivotal role in projects utilizing machine learning for health diagnosis and management systems and is currently leading an evaluation of a diagnostic app aimed at urgent care patients. A co-founder of the OpenMRS open-source Electronic Health Record project, he has held fellowships and received grants supporting his work in global health informatics. His teaching portfolio includes courses in Health Informatics and Global eHealth across institutions such as MIT and the University of Leeds, alongside his current courses at Brown.
