Biography

Hamish Gordon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and is affiliated with the Center for Atmospheric Particle Studies. His research interests focus on the effects of air pollution and natural airborne particles on clouds and climate. He received his bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge in 2009 and completed his doctorate in experimental high energy physics at the University of Oxford in 2013. Prior to his current role, he held a postdoctoral position at the University of Leeds starting in 2019. Gordon's work is centered around the development of weather prediction and climate models that accurately represent the impact of airborne particulate matter on clouds and improve simulations of atmospheric processes on a high-resolution scale. He has actively participated in the CLOUD experiment at CERN between 2013 and 2016, which investigates the formation of new particles in the atmosphere from gases like sulfuric acid. Additionally, he has been involved in aircraft studies examining smoke cloud interactions in the South Atlantic Ocean.
