Hang Young Lee’s research areas span social inequality, social stratification mobility, economic sociology, and social networks. His work centers on illuminating social processes that facilitate or constrain social mobility for individuals, examining mechanisms of cumulative advantage and disadvantage whereby the advantaged remain privileged while the disadvantaged remain underprivileged. He addresses issues in substantive research areas such as social capital and the distribution of income and wealth. Ongoing research includes studies on social capital inequality among immigrant groups, exploring network-driven job search processes and the job attainment experience of disadvantaged minority workers. Furthermore, he examines the degree of top positions held by self-made versus inherited wealth, analyzes cross-country variations in the extent of mobility to top positions, and investigates asset allocation strategies associated with membership in top positions. Lee joined Macquarie University after completing his Ph.D. in sociology at Duke University, where he also served as a postdoctoral researcher at the Social Science Research Institute.
