Biography

Born and raised in Saigon, Vietnam, Hanh Huynh came to Canada in 1980 as a political refugee. After working for two years at Trail Cominco, he began his academic journey at Selkirk College. He graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC) with an Interdisciplinary PhD in Neuroscience and Experimental Pathology in 1994, followed by a one-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Rockefeller University in New York. Huynh then served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. In 1996, he returned to Vietnam, where he worked with a British humanitarian organization to prevent the exploitation of street children and served as a Training Manager for a French pharmaceutical company. After returning to Canada in 2002, he joined UBC as a tutor and instructor, focusing on Problem Based Learning (PBL) for medical students. Huynh was appointed Director of Foundations in Medicine at the University of Northern British Columbia in 2004. His current academic interests span immunometabolism and the application of evidence-based principles in preventing non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cancer.
