Biography

Hani Henein is a professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. He completed his Master of Engineering degree at McGill University in 1975 and earned his PhD from the University of British Columbia in 1981. Henein began his academic career at Carnegie Mellon University and has been at the University of Alberta since 1989. His research focuses on pipeline steels, metal-matrix composites, and rapid solidification and includes extensive collaboration with industry partners. Henein has played a pivotal role in mentoring undergraduates and has formulated international work programs for engineering students in Europe and Japan. He has received numerous accolades, including the Killam Research Fellowship and the Metals Chemistry Award. He is an active member of several professional societies and has served in leadership roles, including as President of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). His recent research interests include materials process engineering, machine learning, and phenomenological modeling, particularly in the context of additive manufacturing and steel processing.
