Biography

Hank Gonzalez is an Associate Professor in Caribbean History at the University of Cambridge. His scholarly work primarily focuses on the history of Haiti, shaped by extensive research periods in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History from Harvard College and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago. Prior to his current role, he served as an Assistant Professor of Caribbean History at the University of South Florida in Tampa for four years. His research particularly emphasizes the complex history of Hispaniola, especially the processes and systems of land ownership and crop production that arose from the slaves' overthrow of the plantation system in colonial Saint Domingue. His 2019 book delves into the early history of independent Haiti, exploring social dynamics such as unauthorized settlements by runaways and squatters influenced by the Haitian Revolution. Gonzalez has also investigated the foreign influence on Haitian art and business in the twentieth century. He has been actively involved in public scholarship, facilitating research workshops on Marronage and teaching multiple courses around Caribbean History.
