Hanna Jerndal is a medical doctor currently working as a doctoral student in Anne-Marie Fors Connolly’s group at Umeå University. Her research primarily focuses on complications related to COVID-19 through register-based clinical cohort studies. Hanna studied medicine at Umeå University and discovered her interest in infectious diseases and global health epidemiology. She received a scholarship from SIDA for Minor Field Studies in 2016 to conduct a project on early warning systems for Dengue in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In 2017, she became a certified Disaster Medicine Trainer at the Università del Piemonte Orientale's Center for Research and Training in Disaster Medicine, Humanitarian Aid, and Global Health (CRIMEDIM) in Novara, Italy. Following her graduation, she combined clinical work with research on infectious diseases, particularly Tuberculosis and Puumala virus. Since the introduction of SARS-CoV-2 in Sweden, Hanna has been part of the planning and coordination team for the CoVUm study in Umeå and is currently investigating acute and long-term complications of COVID-19 such as kidney injury, thrombosis, and arrhythmias. She also works on developing a disease severity index for viral diseases and received the Folke Nordbring Fund stipend for promising young doctors in infectious diseases in 2021, presenting her work at the World Congress of Nephrology 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. Hanna is currently a member of the Umeå University PhD council and involved in various research projects.
