Dr. Hanna Johannesson

Biography

Hanna Johannesson is a prominent fungal researcher at Stockholm University's Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences (DEEP). She became the tenth holder of the historic position of Professor Bergianus, a title dating back to 1791, and is recognized as one of Sweden’s leading experts in fungal evolution. Her academic journey began with a fascination for fungi during her biology studies at Uppsala University. Hanna pursued her doctoral studies at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences focusing on the life cycle of fire-adapted fungi and their interactions with fire-dependent insects. After completing her PhD, she gained postdoctoral experience in Berkeley, California, where she shifted her research focus towards basic research in mycology and evolutionary biology. Over the years, Hanna has held several academic leadership roles, including section dean and deputy vice-rector at the Faculty of Science and Technology. Her current research investigates fungal reproduction and evolution, particularly using ascomycete and basidiomycete model organisms to understand genetic variation in natural populations. In addition to her research, Hanna is passionate about teaching and fostering a robust academic environment for students and colleagues alike. She is dedicated to engaging in both research and educational programs, contributing significantly to the advancement of mycology in academic contexts.
