Biography

Hanna Outakoski is a senior lecturer in the North Sámi Department of Language Studies at Umeå University, Sweden. Her research focuses on multilingualism, literacy instruction, and minority contexts, particularly in relation to the Sámi language. Outakoski is actively involved in projects that examine literacy practices in multilingual preschool classes, the teaching of heritage language writing in Sámi school contexts, and the role of play and games in language learning. She is committed to strengthening the position of Sámi writing among Sámi youth and aims to create new teaching methods that utilize game play to support language acquisition. Outakoski's interests include North Sámi grammar and syntax, as well as exploring the potential of virtual worlds for language revitalization. Currently, she is engaged in a collaborative research project running from October 2020 to December 2024 focused on developing tools for language literacy learning in Sámi classrooms.
