Biography

Hannah Barstow is a pianist, vocalist, and composer in the Toronto jazz scene. She is a performer firmly rooted in the tradition of jazz and is strongly influenced by the music of Shirley Horn, Ahmad Jamal, and Blossom Dearie. As a composer, she is known for her motivic melodies, intricate harmonies, and intimate lyrics reminiscent of Jobim's compositions and jazz standards, all delivered from a modern perspective. Hannah’s unique technique intertwines piano and voice, allowing for a fresh sound that adds depth to her music. She has performed with several renowned jazz artists, including Emilie Claire Barlow, Mike Murley, Kris Davis, Jim Vivian, Steve Wallace, Pat Collins, and the Brian Barlow Big Band, as well as the Greg Runions Big Band and Kingston Symphony. Hannah’s original song “Where Be?” was recorded and released on Emilie Claire Barlow's album 'Spark Bird' in 2023. Additionally, she has released her own albums, 'Summer Dream' in 2021, where she was the sole leader, composer, and arranger, and 'Summer Dream' in 2022, where she served as co-leader and arranger alongside saxophonist Mike Murley.
