My work brings together communication and media studies with the study of religion. I hold a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and an M.A. in Religion and Modernity from Queen’s University. Prior to joining Carleton University, I worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor at New York University (NYU) in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication. My research focuses on how religion mediates political, legal, and cultural discourses, with particular attention to the discourse of Christian persecution. I have explored the ways conservative Christian political and legal advocacy groups in the U.S. employ language of victimization to carve out spaces exempt from anti-discrimination law. My work is informed by intersectional feminist theory and critical cultural studies, and I teach courses in media and religion, political communication, and media theory. I supervise students working on topics in religion, political communication, the public sphere, cultural politics, and popular representations.
