Biography

Hannah Dyer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Child and Youth Studies at Brock University with a PhD from the University of Toronto. A cultural theorist, her research focuses on childhood, aesthetics, critical theory, and psychoanalysis. Dyer is interested in how aesthetic expressive cultures can reshape our understanding of childhood in the context of political crises, historical traumas, and social debates on belonging. Her recent book, 'Queer Aesthetics of Childhood: Asymmetries of Innocence and Cultural Politics of Child Development' (2020, Rutgers University Press), extends her lines of analysis in these areas. Dyer is currently working on a book project with Casey Mecija from York University, which explores aesthetics and affect theory within the framework of queer childhood. As the Principal Investigator of the SSHRC-funded research project, 'Drawing Queer Trans Family: Understanding Kinship in Children’s Art,' Dyer also collaborates as a co-investigator on another SSHRC project titled 'Triggering Education: Relational Readings of Trigger Warnings in Canadian Post-Secondary Classrooms.' She supervises graduate students engaged in projects related to queer theory, sexuality studies, critical childhood studies, and various intersecting issues.
