Biography

Hannah Lewis is a musicologist specializing in music film, visual media, American popular music traditions, musical theater, early twentieth-century French music, and American avant-garde experimental music. She is the author of 'French Musical Culture Coming Sound Cinema' and 'La La Land', both from Oxford University Press, and is a co-editor of 'Voicing Cinema: Film Music Integrated Soundtrack'. Her work has been published in various academic journals, including the Journal of the American Musicological Society and American Music. Additionally, she regularly presents at national and international conferences. Currently, her research examines the cultural and aesthetic aspects of contemporary film musicals and the intersection of musical theater and contemporary politics. In 2019, she received a collaborative research grant from UT’s Office of the Vice President for Research for her project on the cultural impact of participatory singing and its relationship to stakeholders' lived identities.
