Hannah Smithson is a Professor of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford, where she is also a Tutorial Fellow at Pembroke College. Her research primarily investigates the neural mechanisms involved in human perception, particularly focusing on visual perception and the processes through which the brain interprets visual information. She conducts psychophysical experiments to understand perceptual processes and is especially interested in color perception—how signals from cone photoreceptors lead to perceptions of hue, saturation, and brightness. Her work also explores how visual systems adapt to varying environments and how they process rapid sequences of visual events. Current projects include developing an adaptive optics enabled ophthalmoscope to capture high-fidelity images of the retina and link stimulation to neural activity and perceptual experience.
