Biography

Hanneke Grootenboer is a Professor of Early Modern Art and Visual Culture at the University of Amsterdam. She obtained her PhD from the University of Rochester in 2001. Before her current role, she served as a Professor of Art History at Radboud University and was a University Lecturer at the University of Oxford, where she also held the position of Head of the Ruskin School of Art. Grootenboer’s scholarship critically engages with early modern Dutch visual material culture, exploring themes of intimacy, interiority, affect, and miniaturization. She examines early modern art through the lens of contemporary art practices and trends, often collaborating with different institutions. Over her career, she has received several prestigious fellowships and awards, including from the NIAS and the Clark Art Institute. She has published extensively, including works like "Rhetoric of Perspective: Realism and Illusionism in Seventeenth-Century Dutch Life Painting" and has recently co-authored "Conchophilia: Shells, Art and Curiosity in the Early Modern Period." In addition to her books, she has contributed articles to top academic journals and is an active member of various editorial boards. Currently, she is engaged in writing a book on the intersections of art and craft within thought.
