Dr. Hannie Lawlor

Biography

Hannie Lawlor is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages at the University of Oxford. Her academic focus primarily involves women's autobiographical practices in twentieth and twenty-first century literature and film. Her research investigates comparative approaches, examining works across various languages and cultures. Lawlor's monograph analyzes intergenerational responses to traumatic loss within the context of Spanish and French women's writing, highlighting how life writing has evolved within the field. She explores critical questions surrounding the ethics of trauma and the implications of autobiographical narratives. Her current project aims to address the lack of attention given to autobiographical works by Spanish women in international discussions on life writing, surveying diverse forms of self-representation such as grief memoirs and autofictional films. In her teaching, Lawlor instructs the full Prelims course for Spanish students at Lady Margaret Hall and Somerville College. She convenes courses on Hispanic Film and contemporary literature, engaging students with a range of significant Spanish authors. Lawlor is also open to supervising PhD candidates focusing on modern peninsular life-writing and women's writing.
