Biography

Hanno Brankamp joined the University of Glasgow in January 2025. He previously held a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Department of Geography at Durham University, and also served as a departmental lecturer at the Forced Migration Refugee Studies Centre at the University of Oxford. Prior to that, he was a lecturer in Human Geography at King’s College London. His research primarily focuses on migration, displacement, humanitarianism, race, de/coloniality, policing, carcerality, and abolitionism, with particular emphasis on Eastern Africa, especially Kenya. Hanno's current research includes projects on carceral mobilities, creative approaches to migration, coloniality in aid and borders, and the dynamics of racial capitalism in humanitarian markets. His work has been published in several leading journals and he is also involved in public scholarship on topics related to migration and humanitarian issues.
