Biography

Professor Hanno Schaefer combines field ecology, biogeography, molecular phylogenetics, and systematics to understand the origin and evolution of plant diversity and communities. His research focuses on fundamental questions about the processes of speciation and community assembly. He investigates the drivers of diversity, the mechanisms of mutualisms, and the factors influencing extinction risk in diverse habitats. Schaefer has studied biology at the Universities of Wuerzburg and Regensburg in Germany, earning his PhD on the flora of the Azores archipelago under Peter Schoenfelder between 2000 and 2003. He then worked in Susanne Renner's lab at LMU Munich from 2004 to 2008 and held a Marie Curie fellowship at Imperial College London until 2010, followed by a position in Charles C. Davis's lab at Harvard University. He has been a professor at the Technical University of Munich since 2012, contributing significantly to plant biodiversity research and ecological conservation.
