Biography

Hans-Günther Machens specializes in Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery, focusing on regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. He has made significant advancements in methods for induction of angiogenesis and has developed patented techniques for autoregeneration of skin, fat, cartilage, and bone tissues. His primary clinical interest lies in reconstructive surgery and innovative wound healing therapies. After studying medicine in Hanover, Göttingen, and Heidelberg, he obtained his doctorate in 1988 and completed his specialist training in surgery and plastic surgery by 1999. He holds a Chair in Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery at the Technical University of Munich, where he has been instrumental in establishing multicenter clinical studies for new treatment therapies for burn injuries. In 2008, he led the world's first bilateral limb transplantation in humans and has created the Composite Tissue Allotransplantation team at TUM Klinikum.
