Dr. Hans Heinrich Lieb

Biography

Hans-Heinrich Lieb is a distinguished Professor of Linguistics at the Free University of Berlin, where he has significantly contributed to the fields of General and German Linguistics. He studied German philology, English philology, and philosophy at Göttingen, Durham, and Cologne, culminating in his doctorate in 1963. After a brief tenure as a Scientific Assistant in Cologne, he achieved habilitation in General Linguistics in 1969, and subsequently held the position of Associate Professor in Cologne before joining the Free University as a full professor in 1971. Lieb is a co-founder of various linguistic associations, including the International Association for Semiotic Studies and the German Society for Linguistics. He has served on executive committees for prominent linguistic organizations and has published extensively on diverse topics in linguistics. His research interests include phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and the theoretical foundations of linguistics. He has led substantial research projects, including those focusing on grammar theory and the theory of semantics, and is recognized for his in-depth exploration of the intricacies of language structure and use overseas during his visiting professorship at the University of British Columbia. Throughout his career, Lieb has focused on enriching the scientific discourse in linguistics, showcasing innovative methodologies and theoretical approaches.
