Biography

Rudy Wenk joined the Department in 1967. His research focuses on crystallography, mineralogy, structural geology, and rock deformation. He emphasizes understanding seismic anisotropy in the Earth by investigating the development of preferred orientation under extreme conditions such as high temperature and pressure. His methodologies include neutron diffraction, synchrotron X-rays, and electron microscopy. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. Wenk has authored an introductory mineralogy book published by Cambridge University Press, with a new edition that appeared in 2016. He is also writing a guide to discover the unique geology of the Bergell Alps, which is currently in press with Springer-Nature.
