Biography

Professor Hans-Joachim Bungartz leads research in the field of scientific computing, focusing on various aspects of informatics and the entire simulation pipeline. His work encompasses modeling, numerical algorithms, efficient parallel implementations, software for high-performance computing (HPC), and data analytics. His diverse research applications range across fluid mechanics, plasma physics, molecular dynamics algorithms, and quantum mechanical simulations. He studied mathematics, informatics, and economics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), earning his doctorate in 1992 and later obtaining his post-doctoral teaching qualification (Habilitation) in 1998. Before returning to TUM in 2004, he held a professorship in mathematics at the University of Augsburg and an informatics chair at the University of Stuttgart. Professor Bungartz has been actively involved in the academic community as a member of the board of directors of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre and has served on the advisory boards of various HPC centers. He was a chairman of the DFG Commission Infrastructure for seven years and held the position of Chairman of the Executive Board of the German Research Education Network from 2011 to 2020. His contributions also extend to the European University Association as a member of the Steering Committee for Doctoral Education since 2016.
