Biography

Hans W. Hoek focuses on the epidemiology of eating disorders and schizophrenia, specifically the effects of prenatal famine. He has a particular interest in cultural psychiatry, demonstrated through his research with traditional health practitioners in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, as well as black ethnic minorities in the Netherlands Antilles and the immigrant population in The Hague. Hoek is currently the director of the psychiatric residency program and chair at Parnassia Academy, which is part of the Parnassia Psychiatric Institute based in The Hague, a large mental health institute with branches throughout the Netherlands comprising 9,000 employees. He is affiliated with the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, where he holds the position of Professor of Psychiatry. Additionally, Hoek serves as the Associate Editor for a Dutch website dedicated to psychiatry.
