Dr. Hans Kuehl

Biography

Hans Kuehl received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1955 from Princeton University and his PhD in 1959 from the California Institute of Technology, specializing in electrical engineering. He served as Department Chairman from 1987 to 1998 at the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Southern California. His recent research interests focus on the study of localized nonlinear pulses known as solitons and their applications in electronic plasmas and optical fibers, particularly in fiber optic communication, where light pulses formed by solitons are utilized for broadband information transmission. Professor Kuehl has made significant contributions to the basic theory governing the interaction of antennas and electronic plasmas, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the field, which earned him the distinction of Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. His impactful research work includes the exploration of perturbations in solitons and solitary waves, crucial for understanding their properties and enhancements in nonlinear systems. He has also been involved in developing innovative electrical engineering curricula and has consistently received accolades for his teaching, research, and service, including the USC Faculty Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
